2、alleffectofthistechnologyhasbeenpositiveornegative.Whiletherearecertainlyvalidargumentstothecontrary,IpersonallybelievethatthebenefitsoftheInternetfaroutweighitsdrawbacks.Thesebenefitsaretwofold.Firstofall,itisanindisputablefactthattheInternethasrevolutionizedthewaywecommunicate.Despitetheriskofsoci
3、alisolationaproblemoccasionallyseeninpeoplewhospendtoomuchtimeattheircomputerterminalratherthanrelatingtopeopleintherealworld-mostofushavebenefitedgreatlyfrome-mailandinternetchatprogramslikeMSNMessenger.Theseincrediblyusefulandpowerfultoolsofcommunicationfacilitatebothcontactwithlovedonesinfarawayp
4、lacesandglobaltrade.Equallyimportantly,though,theInternethasplacedtheentireworld(andalloftheinformationinit)atourfingertips.Inearliertimes,conductingresearchentailedlonghourssearchinglibraryshelves.Now,however,thesameinformationcanbeaccessedattheclickofabutton.Admittedly,notalloftheinformationavaila
5、bleontheInternetisreliableorhelpful-thereisavastamountofmaterialonlinethatsomewouldconsideroffensiveordangerous,rangingfrompornographytoinstructionsonhowtomakebombs.Nonetheless,Iwouldcontendthatthisfreeflowofinformationhasgenerallybeenaverypositivedevelopment.Bywayofconclusion,Ionceagainreaffirmmypo
6、sitionthattheInternethashadapositiveimpactonmodernlifebecauseofitsinfluenceoncommunicationandtheflowofinformation.2Fastfoodisnowuniversallyavailableinmostcountriesandisbecomingincreasinglypopular.Somefeelthatthisisapositivetrend,whileothersdonot.Whatareyouropinionsonthis?Thepast50yearshaveseenadrama
7、ticincreaseintheavailabilityoffastfood.Somelauditsconvenienceandrelativelylowcost;however,inthisessayIintendtoarguethatthiskindoffoodisdetrimentalbothtotheindividualsthatconsumeitandtosocietyatlarge.Therearetwoprimaryreasonsforthis.Firstofthat,itisanundeniablefactthatconsumingfastfoodtoexcessresults
8、inserioushealthproblems.Foodssuchasfriedchicken,hamburgersandchips-whichareincrediblyhighinfatandsalt-areresponsibleforsuchailmentsashighbloodpressure,obesityandheartdisease.Moreover,althoughIcertainlyagreethatfastfoodisbothaffordableandconvenient,thecostandinconvenienceoftreatingtheillnessesitcause
9、sinlaterlifearesignificant.Inorderwords,whilefastfoodisbeneficialintheshortterm,itslong-termeffectsaregenerallynegative.Furtherandevenmoreimportantly,though,somefastfoodchainsdeliberatelyattempttoattractchildreninordertoshapetheirfutureeatinghabits.OneparticularlygoodexampleofthisisthecharacterRonal
10、dMcDonald-thebrightclothesandsmileoftheMcDonaldclownareabeacontochildren.HavinggrownupeatinginMcDonaldrestaurants,peoplearelikelytocontinueeatingtherethroughouttheiradultlives.ItisalsointerestingtonotethatMcDonaldprovidesplaygroundsandfrequentlyholdschildrensbirthdaypartiesinordertoattractyoungchild
11、renandtheirparents.Bywayofconclusion,Ibelievethatfastfoodwillcontinuetobecomemorepopularasthepaceoflifeincreases.Giventhehealthrisksassociatedwiththistrend,Ibelievethatpubliceducationcampaignswarningpeopleaboutthedangersoffastfoodwouldbewarranted.3Internationaltourismisnowmorecommonthaneverbefore.So

13、rawbacksassociatedwiththistrendareasfollows.Firstofall,globaltourismtendstoexportmanynegativeaspectsofwesternculture.Sinceitisonlythewealthywhocanaffordtotravelabroad,developingcountrieslikeThailandandIndonesiahavebecometheplaygroundsoftouristsfrommoreaffluentones.Inmanysuchnations,thisinfluxofmainl
14、ywesterntouristshasbroughtwithitproblemssuchasprostitutionaswellasalcoholismanddrugabuse.Admittedly,internationaltourismdoeshavethepotentialtofostergreaterunderstandingandtolerancebetweenpeopleofdifferentcultures.However,thisisunlikelytooccurwhileitremainssuchapotentsymbolofwesternculturaldomination
15、andmoraldecadence.Evenmoredisturbing,though,istheenvironmentaldegradationthatinternationaltourismhascausedinmanypartsoftheworld.OneparticularlysalientexampleofthisistheGreatBarrierReefinAustralia-thecountlessboats,diversandsnorkelersthathavevisitedthereefoverthepastfewdecadeshavegraduallydestroyedva
16、stsectionsofcoral.Similarly,worldrenownedKutaBeachinBalihasbecomeheavilypollutedinrecentyears.Inordertobesustainable,greaterregulationofglobaltourismisrequired.Inconclusion,thechallengespresentedbytheboominginternationaltouristindustryarenumerousandcomplex.Althoughtheyarebynomeansinsurmountable,itis
17、highlyunlikelythattheywillberesolvedintheforeseeablefuture.Nowadays,morepeoplearemigratingtoothercountriesthaneverbefore.Inordertobecomeintegratedintosocietyintheiradoptedcountries,immigrantsshouldabandontheiroldwaysandadapttolocalcustomsandcodesofbehavior.Doyouagreeordisagree?Thesedays,itseemsthatm
18、orepeoplearemigratingtoothercountriesthaneverbefore.Thisraisescertainquestionsabouttheintegrationofnewcomersintosociety.Althoughtherearevalidargumentstothecontrary,inthispaperIwillarguethatitistheresponsibilityofimmigrantstoadapttoacceptedrulesofbehaviorintheiradoptedcountry,bothwrittenandunwritten.
19、Thereasonsforthisaretwofold.Firstly,itisvitallyimportantthatnewcomersobservethelawsoftheiradoptedcountryforthesakeofsocialorder.Imaginethechaosthatwouldensureifpeoplerefusedtodriveonthesamesideoftheroad.Itis,therefore,necessaryforallimmigrantstoensurethattheyobservethelawintheirnewcountryregardlesso
20、fanydifferencestolawsintheirhomecountry.Twofurtherinstancesofpracticeswhicharepermittedinsomecountriesbutprohibitedinordersarethepossessionoffirearmsandgambling.Secondlyandmoreimportantly,though,inordertomaintainsocietalcohesionitisessentialthatnewcomersrespectthesocialnormsoftheiradoptedcountry.Ofc
21、ourse,havingamixtureofdifferentculturesandtraditionsgivesacountrycolourandvibrancy;however,Iwouldcontendthattoomuchculturaldiversityunderminesasocietybyalienatingpeoplefromeachother.Itismybeliefthatsimilaritiesunitepeople,whereasdifferenceshaveatendencytodivide.Astrongsocietyisahomogenoussocietywith
22、sharedvaluesandgoals.Bywayofconclusion,Ibelievethatthisissueislikelytobecomeevenmoreimportantinthefutureasbordersbetweencountriesbecomeincreasinglyblurred.It,therefore,demandsourfurtherconsideration.Menandwomenaredifficultintermsoftheircharacteristicsandabilities.Forthisreason,somejobsarebetterdoneb
23、ymenandothersbywomen.Doyouagreeordisagree?Thesedays,itseemsthatmorewomenareentering“maleoccupations”thaneverbeforeandviceverssomestillholdtotheconservativeviewthatcertainjobsarebetterperformedbymenandothersbywomen,itismypersonalbeliefthatpeopleofeithersexarecapableofdoinganyjobeffectively.Thereasons
24、formypositionareasfollows.Firstofall,Ibelieveitisamistaketobaseourviewsonbroadgeneralizationsaboutthecharacteristicsofmenandwomenassuchstereotypesareofteninaccurate.Althoughtherearecertainlytraitswhicharetypicalofmenandotherswhicharetypicalofwomen,thereareexceptionstoeveryrule.Notallwomenarephysical
25、lyweak,justasnotallmenarepoorinterpersonalcommunicators;conventionalgenderrolesarenotappropriateforeverybody.Ifamanorwomandesirestopursueacareerwhichistraditionallyreservedfortheoppositesex,Ibelievehe/sheshouldbeprovidedtheopportunitytoprovehim/herselfcapable.Secondly,Iwouldcontendthatthepresenceofb
26、othmalesandfemalesinaworkplacebringsasenseofbalance.Menandwomenfrequently,thoughbynomeansalways,havedifferentmethodsofdoingthings.Ratherthanjudgingthesedifferencestobeweaknesses,Ifeelthatweshouldviewthemasopportunitiesforinnovationandthediscoveryofmoreeffectiveandefficientworkpractices.Apersonsweakn
27、essescanthusbetransformedintostrengths.Insummary,Ionceagainreaffirmmypositionthatbothmaleandfemaleemployeesareanassettoanyindustryandasourstereotypesaboutmenandwomenarenotalwaysappropriate,wemustnotdiscourageanyonefromchoosinganoccupationsimplybecauseofhis/hergender.Smokingisamajorcauseofseriousilln
28、essanddeaththroughouttheworldtoday.Intheinterestofpublichealth,governmentsshouldbancigarettesandothertobaccoproducts.Doyouagreeordisagree?Therearewidelydifferingviewsontheissueofwhethertobaccoshouldbebannedornot.Somepeoplewouldsuggestthatitistheirrighttosmokeandthatprohibitingcigaretteswouldbeaviola
29、tionoftheircivilliberties;however,Ipersonallybelievethattobaccoshouldindeedbemadeillegal.Therearetwoprincipalreasonsforthis.OnepointwhichIbelievetobeabsolutelypivotalisthefactthattobaccoisadrug.Themajorityofgovernmentsaroundtheworldtakeaprohibitionistapproachtotheproblemofsubstanceabuse.Ifgovernment
30、swishtobeconsistentinpursuingtheir“warondrugs”,therIbelievefore,theymustbantobaccoaswell.Thisisparticularlyheroinandmarijuana-havelegitimatemedicalapplications,whiletobaccohasnone.However,perhapsthestrongestargumentinfavorofbanningcigarettesandothertobaccoproductsisthatofpublichealth.Itisanirrefutab
31、lefactthatsmokingleadstolungcancerandothersuchpotentiallyfataldiseases.Pro-smokinggroupswouldnodoubtarguethateachindividualhastherighttodeterminewhatgoesintohis/herownbody.Nevertheless,Iwouldsuggestthattheinterestsandrightsofsocietyatlargemustoverridethoseoftheindividual.Themedicaltreatmentthatsmoke
32、rsrequireisoftenincrediblycostly,anditisfrequentlygovernmentsandsocietythatcoverthesecostsratherthantheindividualsmoker.Hence,Ifeelthatlawsprohibitingsmokingwouldbeentirelyjustified.Inreality,ofcourse,thewidespreadprohibitionofsmokingisunlikelyinthenearfuture.However,giventheseriousnessoftheproblems
33、thatitcauses,Ibelievethatthisshouldbetheultimategoal.Tryingtosaveendangeredanimalspeciesfromextinctionisawasteofvaluableresources.Doyouagreeordisagree?Theissueofwhetherweshouldattempttosaveendangeredspeciesfromextinctionornotiscertainlyacontentiousone.Despitetheargumentsofsomepeoplethatsuchanimalsse
34、rvenousefulpurposeandshouldbeallowedtodieoutjustasmanyothers(includingthedinosaurs)haveinthepast,itismypersonalbeliefthattheyshouldinfactbepreserved.Twooftheprincipalreasonsforthisareasfollows.Firstly,itisvitalthatweappreciatetheimportanceofendangeredspeciesinmaintainingthebalanceofnature.Ecosystems
35、aredelicatearrangementswhereplantsandanimalsalldependoneachotherforsurvival.Thedisappearanceorintroductionofanyanimalspeciesdisruptsthebalanceandnegativelyimpactsuponotherplantsandanimalsbybreakingthefoodchainandalteringthehabitatinwhichtheylive.Suchimbalancesfrequentlyreturntohauntusinunexpectedway
36、s.JustasrabbitsthatwereintroducedtoAustraliasoonafterEuropeansettlementnowcompetewithnativespeciesforfoodanddestroyfarmerscrops,theextinctionofapredatorcancauseplaguesbyallowingitspreytomultiplyunchecked.Therefore,sinceecologicalchangeconstitutesapotentialrisktousandourenvironment,itisclearlyIourown
37、intereststoprotectendangeredspecies.Yet,perhapsthestrongestargumentinfavorofpreservingendangeredspeciesisthatalllifehasintrinsicvalue;evenifendangeredspeciesarenotusefultousinanypracticalwaytheyshouldbepreservednevertheless.Further,giventhatwehumansareresponsiblefordestroyingthenaturalhabitatofmanye
38、ndangeredanimals,weshouldmakeeverypossibleefforttosavethem.Inconclusion,Ionceagainrestatemyviewthatsavingendangeredspeciesisworthwhile.Notonlydotheyhelptomaintainthebalanceofnature,buttheyalsohavevalueinandofthemselves.Withdivorceratesandfamilybreakdownsincreasingglobally,itisgenerallyacceptedthatfa
39、miliestodayarenotascloseastheyusedtobe.Discussthecausesofthisproblemandoffersomepossiblesolutionstoit.Divorceandfamilybreakdownwerevirtuallyunheardofjust100yearsago.Now,however,almosthalfofallmarriagesfail.Thisphenomenonissymptomaticofthegrowingdistancebetweenfamilymembersinmodernsociety.Inthisessay,Iintendtoexplorethesourcesofthisprob
