Here are some weird English words that you need to watch out for when studying, along with some patterns that will help you understand English spelling a littl

、e better and improve your writing skills. The amount of words with unusual spellings is almost impossible to count, but lets go over some important spelling patterns and anomalies that you will need

、to know to get a firm grasp of the English writing system.拼寫(xiě)不規(guī)則的單詞數(shù)量幾乎難以數(shù)計(jì),讓我們?cè)贉亓?xí)一下一些重要的拼寫(xiě)格式和你需要了解的不規(guī)則拼寫(xiě)情形,才能更牢固地掌握英語(yǔ)寫(xiě)作體系。Through,Dough, EnoughThrough(通過(guò)),Dough(生面團(tuán)),Enough(足夠)Now,this is a very interesting case. All three of these words clearly use the “ough” suffix, and as you probably know the sou

、nd of the word isnt pronounced like the g of giraffe. 這是一個(gè)非常有趣的例子。所有這三個(gè)單詞顯然都使用了ough 這個(gè)后綴,你或許知道這些單詞中g(shù)h的發(fā)音與giraffe(長(zhǎng)頸鹿)中的g 不同。But what makes the spellings of these words even weirder is that each of these words has a completely different pronunciation, even though they all end with “ough. You would th

、ink all these words should rhyme, but in reality they actually sound quite different from each other.但是,讓這些單詞的拼寫(xiě)顯得更為奇怪是每一個(gè)詞語(yǔ)都有著完全不同的發(fā)音,盡管他們都以ough結(jié)尾??赡苣阏J(rèn)為所有這些單詞都應(yīng)該押韻,但實(shí)際上,他們的發(fā)音聽(tīng)起來(lái)完全不同。Through(Throo) The road passes through a valley.這條路從一個(gè)山谷中穿過(guò)。Dough(Doe)You need dough in order to make bread.你需要揉面團(tuán)來(lái)做面

The part that confuses a lot of English students is the combination of two vowels to form eau, and how to cor

、rectly pronounce it. Now, heres something intriguing: If you put these three vowels together, they end up sounding like a 4th vowel (o).這是另一組有趣的拼寫(xiě)。這部分內(nèi)容中讓很多英語(yǔ)學(xué)生混淆的是兩個(gè)元音的組合eau、以及如何正確發(fā)音。其中有一點(diǎn)非常有趣:如果你把這三個(gè)元音放在一起,他們最終的發(fā)音聽(tīng)起來(lái)像第四個(gè)元音(o)。Plateau(Plaat-o) The peace process had reached a plateau.這個(gè)和平進(jìn)程已經(jīng)到了一個(gè)穩(wěn)定時(shí)

、期。Bureau(Byur-o) I work at the National Bureau of Statistics.我在國(guó)家統(tǒng)計(jì)局工作。Gateau(Gaat-o) My grandmother made me a chocolate gateau for my birthday. 奶奶為我的生日做了一個(gè)巧克力奶油蛋糕。Xylophone,XenophobiaXylophone(木琴),Xenophobia(仇外)The main feature of these words is the x consonant at the beginning of each word. X alon

、e has a sound more similar to the sound eks,but when it is put in front of words, it usually makes the sound z.這些詞的主要特點(diǎn)是輔音x 位于每個(gè)單詞的開(kāi)頭。X 本身的發(fā)音類似于eks,但當(dāng)它被放置在單詞首字母時(shí),它通常發(fā)音為z。Xylophone(Zai-la-fone) I used to play the Xylophone when I was in high school.我以前在高中時(shí)期常常玩木琴。Xenophobia(Zee-na-fobe-eea) Xenophobia

、his job.我懷疑他能否勝任他的工作。Debt(Det)Ive finally paid off all of my debts.我終于還清了所有的債務(wù)。 Critique,Torque, MosqueCritique(批評(píng)、評(píng)論),Torque(扭矩),Mosque(清真寺)In this situation, the key understanding how que is pronounced. You might think its pronounced similar to the que in queen, but it really only creates a k sound

、 at the end of a word:在這種情況下,關(guān)鍵是了解que 要如何發(fā)音。你可能會(huì)認(rèn)為它的發(fā)音與queen中的que 類似,但實(shí)際上在詞尾它只產(chǎn)生一個(gè)k的音:Critique(Cri-teek)He has asked me to critique his artwork.他要我評(píng)論他的作品。Torque(Tork) The three-litre engine has lots of torque.這個(gè)三升的發(fā)動(dòng)機(jī)有很多的扭矩。Mosque(Mosk)There is a beautiful green mosque inour city.在我們城市有一座美麗的、綠色的清真寺。

When Kn is placed in front of a word, it almost always is read out as N and the letter K becomes silent.這些大概是英語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)者將會(huì)遇到的最奇怪的拼寫(xiě)。當(dāng)Kn放置在一個(gè)單詞的詞首時(shí),它總是發(fā)音成 N,而K不發(fā)音。Know(No) I dont know

、 what this means.我不知道這意味著什么。Knight-(Nite) The knight left the castle to look for the princess.騎士離開(kāi)城堡去尋找公主。Knife-(Nife)Please out the knife down1 2 .請(qǐng)把刀放下。 Colonel,Island, ReceiptColonel(陸軍上校),Island(島嶼),Receipt(收據(jù))Now these three words are weird in their own unique ways: Receipt is another example o

、ree words is colonel. This is because colonel actually is pronounced quite differently than how its spelled; the olo part of colonel is pronounced as er!Island(島嶼)也包含了一個(gè)不發(fā)音的字母 s。然而。這三個(gè)單詞中最奇怪的是colonel一詞。這是因?yàn)閏olonel的發(fā)音實(shí)際上與它的拼寫(xiě)截然不同; colonel中的olo的部分發(fā)音為er!Colonel(Kernal)He was a high ranking colonel in t

、ges, and have also kept their original spellings and pronunciations. In other words, when you speak English, you often speak a couple words of French, Latin, Greek, some Arabic and many other languages. When English

、 borrows a word from another language, its often difficult to change its spelling to make it suitable with the language, and thus the word will maintain its spelling. Examples of this are bureau, plateau and gateau, which all have French origins and still maintain their French spellings. 當(dāng)英語(yǔ)從其他語(yǔ)系中借用一

、個(gè)單詞時(shí),往往很難改變它的拼寫(xiě)規(guī)則使其適合自己的語(yǔ)言,所以這個(gè)詞仍保持自己的拼寫(xiě)規(guī)則。這個(gè)情形下有很多例子:bureau, plateau 和 gateau,它們都源自于法語(yǔ),而且還保留著法語(yǔ)的拼寫(xiě)規(guī)則。However,as a language evolves, the ways we speak words change, as well. For instance, in the case mentioned of knight and know, there once was a time when the K of these words was actually pronounced

、! But as spoken English changed, people decided to ignore the k sound in the front of these words, but this didnt mean the spellings of these words changed.然而,隨著一個(gè)語(yǔ)言的發(fā)展,我們說(shuō)單詞的方式也在改變。例如,前面提到的knight和 know,曾經(jīng)有一段時(shí)間這些單詞中的K 是發(fā)音的!但由于英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)的改變,人們決定忽略單詞詞首K 的發(fā)音,可這并不意味著這些詞的拼寫(xiě)規(guī)則也改變。There are often huge debates on

、the origins of various words, but thats a topic for another day. The fact of the matter remains,English is a beautiful but complex language, and one of its major complexities is its spelling system. 對(duì)于大部分單詞的起源歷來(lái)有很大的爭(zhēng)議,但那個(gè)話題我們改天再聊。 現(xiàn)在事情的事實(shí)是,英語(yǔ)是一個(gè)美麗而復(fù)雜的語(yǔ)言,而其主要的復(fù)雜性之一就是它的拼寫(xiě)體系。So how are you supposed to remember all these unusu
