My grandparents were coming by plane to hear me play. Even my busy Aunt Dianne, who is on TV every night reading the news, was coming. But one thing was for sure. I would never win an award for my piano playing. And thats just because the more I practiced, the more nervous I got. So there I was, on the stage, in my beautiful dress, and I sat down at the piano. But when I started to play,I hit a wrong note. I told myself to start over. But then I hit the wrong note again. It was as if I hadnt practiced at all. Finally the disaster was over. I ran off the stage. I couldnt understand why audience(觀眾) were clapping. But they were. My mom and dad had flowers for me and we were all supposed to go out for a nice dinner, but I couldnt. I just wanted to go home and cry and never go anywhere again. After we went back home, Aunt Dianne just came in and sat down on the side of my bed. “It was my first night on the air,” she said. “I had never been on television before and I made a mistake. I mispronounced my name and the name of the news show. And you know what? No one even noticed but me. Just like tonight, no one noticedjust you.” Aunt Dianne was right. Encouragement from the audienceCThere is an English saying that “Laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter can really improve peoples health, can benefit us both physically and psychologically in a great way. Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, makes the heart beat quicker and makes people breathe deeper; it also works on several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial. Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effects of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated(忍耐)the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which diminishes both stress and pain. As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial(有益的) effects similar to those caused by laughter.7. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this, which seems uncountable for people in oriental(東方的) cultures. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families. Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily. Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they dont show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably. For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!11.The writer of this passage must be _.A. an AmericanB. a ChineseC. a professorD. a student12.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.B. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.C. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.D. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.13.From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be _.A. warmly welcomed at the airportB. offered a ride to his homeC. treated hospitably at his homeD. treated to dinner in a restaurant14.The underlined words “generous with our time” in Paragraph 3 probably mean _.A. strict with timeB. serious with timeC. careful with timeD. willing to spend time15. A suitable title for this passage would probably be “_”.A. Friendships between ChineseB. Friendships between AmericansC. Americans and Chineses views of friendshipsD. Emotional eating is when people use food as a way to deal with feelings instead of satisfying hunger. _16_ Have you ever finished a whole bag of chips out of boredom(無聊) or downed cookie after cookie while preparing for a big test? But when done a lot especially without realizing it emotional eating can affect weight, health, and overall well-being. Not many of us make the connection between eating and our feelings. _17_ One of the viewpoints about emotional eating is that its caused by terrible feelings. Yes, people often turn to food when theyre stressed out, lonely, sad, anxious, or bored. But emotional eating can be linked to positive(積極的) feelings too, like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentines Day or the celebration of a big holiday dinner. Sometimes emotional eating is tied to major life events, like a death or a divorce. _18_ Emotional eating patterns can be learned: A child who is given candy after a big achievement may grow up using candy as a praise for a job well done. _19_ Its not easy to “unlearn” patterns of emotional eating. But it is possible. And it starts with an awareness of whats going on. Were all emotional eaters in some way. But for some people emotional eating can be a real problem, causing serious weight gain or other problems. The trouble with emotional eating is that once the pleasure of eating is gone, the feelings that cause it remain. _20_ Thats why it helps to know the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger. Next time you reach for a snack, wait and think about which type of hunger is driving it.A. Believe it or not, weve all been there in daily lives.B. If a crying boy gets some cookies, he may link(聯(lián)系) cookies with comfort.C. One study found that people who eat food like pizza become happy afterwards.D. And you often may feel worse about eating the amount or type of food you like.E. Understanding what drives emotional eating can help people take steps to change it.F.
