Do you know something about Chinese table manners?M: Err I really dont know .I just know Chinese dinner table is chopsticks instead of knife and fork.A: Ha-ha, thats only superficial.M: Is it very complex?B: Ah, a little. There are mostly concerned with the use of chopsticks. Otherwise generally Chinese table manners are rather more informal.A: Yes, but I have to tell you that Chinese eating habits is that unlike the West, where everyone has his/her own plate of food. In China the dishes are on the table and everybody shares together.M: Shares? How?B: Use the chopsticks. Chopsticks must always be held in the correct manner. They should be held between the thumb and fingers of the right .As they are traditionally held in the right hand only, left-handed chopsticks use is consider as improper etiquette by some people.M: So I need to use them with my right hand?A: Yes. When communal chopsticks are supplied with shared plates of food, it is considered impolite to use your own chopsticks to pick up the food from the shared plate or eat using the communal chopsticks. An exception to this rule is made in intimate family dinners where family members may not mind the use of ones own chopsticks to transfer food.B: And it is also considered impolite to use the blunt end of the chopsticks to transfer food from a common dish to your own.M: It sounds complicated. There are lots of rules on Chinese table manners.B:So when you pick up a piece of food, never use the tips of your chopsticks to poke through the food and do not hover around or poke looking for special ingredientsM: Oh, I know. I have known much about it. Like a story, so longA: Story? There is a story about chopsticks.M: Really? Im so interested in it.A: When you have dinner, using chopsticks, do not stick your chopsticks upright in the rice bowl. Instead, lay them on your dish. M: Why! It sounds unreasonable.A: The reason for this is that when somebody dies, the shrine to them contains a bowl of sand or rice with two sticks of incense stuck upright in it. So if you stick your chopsticks in the rice bowl, it looks like this shrine and is equivalent to wishing death upon a person at the table!M: That accounts for it. This story amazed me.
