AOne day Mr. White gave his wife ten pounds for her birthday ten new pound notes. So Mrs. White went out shopping. She waited for a bus, got on it and sat down next to an o1d 1ady. After a while, Mrs. White noticed that the old 1adys handbag was open. Inside it, she saw a wad(疊)of pound notes exactly like the ones her husband had given her. So she quickly looked into her own bag the notes had gone! Mrs. White was sure that the o1d lady next to her had stolen them. She immediately thought of calling the police. But as she disliked making a fuss(小題大作), she decided to take back the money from the old 1adys hand bag and say nothing about it. She looked around to make sure nobody was watching. Then she carefully put her hand into the o1d ladys bag, took the notes, and put them into her own handbag. When she got home that evening, Mrs. White showed her husband the beautiful hat she had bought. “How did you pay for it?” Mr. White asked. “With the money you gave me for my birthday, of course” she answered. “Oh? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing when you are happy. Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.Do you know what a “territory” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims (聲稱) as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your house is your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.If so, you have actually frightened the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting (筑巢) season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a birds song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.4.Some scientists believe that most of the time birds singing is actually _.Aan expression of happiness B. a way of warningC. an expression of anger D. a way of greeting5.What is a birds “territory”?A.A place where families of other species are not accepted.B.A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice.C.An area for which birds fight against each other.D.An area which a bird considers to be its own.6.Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?A .Because they want to invite more friends.B. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Heres how: Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. 17 A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time. Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may by a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or televisions. When you sit down to study concentrate on the subjects. Make good use of your time in class. 18 Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says. Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. 19 If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer. Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world wont end if you dont pass a test, so dont be over worried. 20 You will probably discover many others after you have tried these. A. There are other methods that might help you with your studying. B. Dont forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. C. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says. D. No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard. E. Maybe you are an average student. F. Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class. G.
