Period 3 Reading Fun Times Park Teaching aims1 Assist Ss to gain a deep comprehension of the article.2 Develop Ss reading strategies, especially in skimming and scanning.3 Raise Ss culture awareness to make them more polite.4 Mentally prepare Ss for the high school English learning.Keys & puzzles How to make Ss understand skimming and scanning as well as apply them into practiceTeaching approachesTBTTeaching proceduresIn generalTo highlight the importance of the Reading strategy of this unit, and actually because they ARE fundamental to either intensive reading or extensive reading, it would be a good idea to explain these two verbs (skim and scan) to the Ss first. After Ss know what they are, they are ready to find out how helpful they can be. Therefore, the teacher is supposed to prepare some skimming and scanning exercises, which, usually in the form of questions, demand a quality of being directive. Only with this feature can they serve to help Ss locate the needed information in the smallest amount of time. As a matter of fact, Ss will have a general idea of the whole passage afterwards, and get prepared for the detailed reading. In the process of detailed reading, Ss can be asked to create some questions and use those to crosscheck the comprehension in pairs, groups or even the whole class. In this way, Ss are expected to polish their abilities in both reading and writing. Then, Ss will do some written exercise in class. For example: could you please tell me where ? Do you know where / if ? Can you tell me how can I get to? Then show some stamps, help students to question Could you tell me where I can buy some stamps? Next show a picture of post office and help students answer Yes. Show four statements about the conversation:_ On their way to Water City Restaurant, Alice and He Wei pass by Uncle Bobs._ They decided to go to Water City Restaurant._ Alice and He Wei are in Space World._ They asked a staff person and would have dinner at Uncles Bobs restaurant.Ask students to read them and match them with the scenes. (Tell students to make use of the title ,the picture and the sentence in front of each scene.)Here are some skimming and scanning questions. Its assumed that in this way the Ss will develop the habit of being attentive while learning.2. Read the conversation and answer the questions:1. Why did Alice not want to go on the new ride? Why?Have students read the question and make sure they can understand the meaning of the questions. Then listen to the conversation and pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation. The teacher is supposed to accelerate the pace of asking questions as the activity moves on. In this way, the students can gain a strong sense of achievement. (3 minutes)3. Not only are the Ss supposed to understand what an objective clause is, how to ask for information politely. In this period, Ss will focus their attention on the first two objectives, that is, getting to know objective clauses and relatives on the whole. First of all, Ss will test themselves by trying to identify sentences with objective clauses in a pile of different sentence structures. Then change a direct question into a polite question. After they have some direct experiences in dealing with this grammatical phenomenon, they can conclude by themselves what an objective clause is. In this process, “word order”, “tense” will be introduced and defined. Then their attention will be drawn to the word order and tense . They can discuss as well as consult the book. To support their own conclusions and also build up some materials for analyzing the functions, Ss are required to use objective clause to ask for information politely. The teacher can monitor this procedure by choosing and supplementing some for later analysis.
