In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually was made up of saying poetry aloud and giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates(應(yīng)試者) for the doctors degree.Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modern industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, looks like a group of workers at an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimes called an “objective” test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test, the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like answers to students who have not learned the material properly.36. The main idea of Paragraph Three is that _ . A. workers now take examinations B. the population has grown C. there are only written exams today D. examinations are now written and timed37. The kind of exams where students must select answers are _ . A. objective B. personal C. spoken D. written38. Modern industry must have developed _ . A. around the 19th century B .before the Middle Ages C. in Greece or Rome D. machines to take tests39. It may be concluded that testing _ . A. should test only opinions B. should always be written C. is given only in factories D. has changed since the Middle Ages BThere is an English saying, Laughter is the best medicine. Until recently, few people took the saying very seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to study laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found facts that laughter really can improve peoples health.Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart rate and the rate of breathing, it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produce pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group which put up with the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce endorphins in the brain. These are natural chemicals which diminish both stress and pain. There are also some facts to suggest that laughter helps the bodys immune(免疫的)system, that is, the system which fights infection. In all experiments, one group of students watched a funny video while another group of students served as the control group namely, a group with which to compare the first group. Doctors checked the blood of the students in both groups and found that the people in the group that watched the video had an increase in the activity of their white blood cells, that is, the cells which fight infection. As a result of these discoveries, some doctors and psychiatrists(精神病學(xué)家)in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they try to improve their patients condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.41t can be learnt from the passage that laughter can _.A. make people feel youngerB. change peoples habitsC. improve peoples healthD. make people love their lives42.he underlined word diminish in Paragraph 3 probably means _.A. testB. reduce C. increaseD. find43.The main idea of this passage is that _.A. the doctors should learn how to make people laughB. there are several ways of studying the benefits of laughterC. tests show that laughter can produce beneficial effects on human bodyD. laughter and physical exercise have the same effects on human body限時(shí)訓(xùn)練(二)答案單項(xiàng)選擇:1-5 DDACB 6-10 ABCBD 11-12 BB完形填空16-20 CBBDC 21- 25 ACAAD 26-30 DCBAD 31-35 BCDAD【解題導(dǎo)語】 本文講的是作者去參加朋友給他們準(zhǔn)備的只有素菜沒有大魚大肉簡樸的晚宴,其朋友用心良苦,旨在告誡人們要節(jié)約和環(huán)保。1 Aexcited Bdisappointed Csurprised Ddelighted解析:從下文的“. he never spends more than he has to”這一通常的行為可推知Ben這次邀請這么多朋友讓人吃驚。答案:C2A.takes Bspends Cuses Ddoes解析:結(jié)合上下文可以推出Ben一般情況下是不請朋友吃飯的。答案:B3A.cheap Bspecial Cp
